The Shuck Shack | SOMD’s Hidden Oyster Speakeasy

Shellman's Shuck Shack Sign Above Red Ice Bucket on a Wooden Table

Shellman’s Shuck Shack sign displayed above a red ice bucket—soon to be filled with fresh oysters.

Tucked away in the quiet bends of Sotterley Road in Hollywood, Maryland, just a couple of miles off Route 235, lies a local institution that’s been serving the community since 1967: Snellman’s General Merchandise. This family-owned country store is the ultimate one-stop shop for locals and the go-to for boaters heading out on the water at the nearby Forrest Landing boat ramp. The sign out front proudly lists the essentials: “Groceries, Beer, Wine, Liquor, Ice, Fishing Tackle, Bait, and Lottery.” If you have gone to the Historic Sotterly or Greenwell State Park, then you’ve likely driven past it countless times—maybe even stopping for ice, snacks, a cold beer, or a fishing license. But here’s the best-kept local secret: most folks have no idea about the treasure hiding in the back. The best kept local secret, however, is that most folks have no idea about the treasure hiding in the back.

WELCOME TO THE SHUCK SHACK—A TRUE OYSTER SPEAKEASY!

To find it, weave your way through the store to the very rear, or slip in through the unmarked side door at the back of the parking lot. Step inside, and you’ll discover a cozy, intimate back-room bar: a small counter with stools, an oyster shucking station, a warm wood stove crackling in the corner, and a handful of tables. It’s unpretentious, welcoming, and full of that authentic Southern Maryland charm. This hidden oasis comes alive every Friday (and only Fridays) during the colder months, from 5 to 7 pm for Oyster Happy Hour. Two glorious hours to savor ultra-fresh oysters, ice-cold beer, and live music in an atmosphere that’s pure relaxation.

Behind the bar, you’ll often find Ms. Nancy pouring drinks with a smile. Owner-operator Mr. Willie tends to the roasted oysters, while Mr. Jay expertly shucks them fresh. The stars of the show are the farm-raised oysters striaght from the Hollywood Oyster Company and pulled right out of the Patuxent River just down the road. We’re talking Hollywood and Sweet Jesus varieties: with a sweet, complex flavor profile featuring hints of minerality, moss, and a clean finish. Enjoy them raw on the half-shell or roasted to perfection – either way, they’re unforgettable.Space is limited, so arrive early to snag a seat. But don’t rush the experience—this is a back-room bar in a classic country store, after all. Kick back, chat with locals, listen to the tunes, and soak up the experience.

Local Tip: Rumor has it that if you ask nicely (and while supplies last), you might score a couple of complimentary shucked Sweet Jesus or Hollywood oysters with your drink purchase. They are definitely worth a polite inquiry!

Whether you’re a St. Mary’s County regular or just passing through, the Shuck Shack is a must-visit. It’s more than oysters and beer—it’s a slice of hidden Southern Maryland living. See you there next Friday!
